Understanding Slots and Renderers


A slot is a dynamic placeholder that waits for or calls out for content. It’s used in conjunction with renderers to manage content on a page, much like how the renderer specifies how the page will look. It’s important to understand how slots and renderers work in tandem so that you can create and configure them properly.

In a computer, a slot is a position in the operating system where an operation is issued to a functional unit (FU). A slot is also known as a ‘pipeline’ or ‘run-length’. The number of slots available in a machine is limited, but they can be filled with operations as needed. Usually, one slot is assigned to one CPU core. The remaining slots can be used by other processes and threads in the same process group.

When you play a slot machine, symbols line up on a reel and, when a winning combination is hit, the player earns credits based on the pay table.
